What’s Underneath

Originally written in February of 2021.

as we step outside
let it be a parallel
in our lives
that as the snow melts
we'd begin to see
all that is there
underneath

and all that has been
the whole time
frozen over
and as it grew colder
we forgot

this burying, the weight
of layers and layers
and staying in place
we've gotten used to
not hoping for change

but then
days like today
remind us that
this wintering never stays
and we watch as
it all begins
to melt away
making a way
to begin again
